Interesting to hear Adrian Newey admit that RBR would have been better off now had it backed off earlier on RB9 development last year.

Merc interpretation of the rule is completely different from the other team. All the other team's idea to meet the minimum height is the tip of the nose. This results in the sausages or Ferrari's low nose, because everyone's thinking is that the tip needs to meet the minimum height.
Not Merc however. Merc use the edge of the U shape to meet the minimum height requirement. So their idea is similar to Ferrari, but they do not need the middle tip to meet the minimum height which allows the to raise the nose as high as they wanted, while Ferrari kept the nose tip low to meet the rule.
What the rule said was that the nose cross section had to be of certain area, and it's height must be a certain height. But it never say what shape it should be. So as long as one point of this area meets the minimum height, it's legal.

Well then it is illegal isn't it? Because there has to be only 1 point of the nose in that area. And by doing that, they have 2. That's why Lotus have to have the tusks in different sizes.

Single point meaning the a single cross section arae. In the finger nose for example, the entire finger's cross section is the cross section required. This area can be any shape.
Lotus has two seperate cross section, so they have move one cross section backwards so it doesn't fall into the cross section mentioned by the rules.

I'm quite sure of that.. They got an idea, but they knew they couldn't get it working, so they are developping it now, to use later in the season.. They said they had more than 1 nose.. I mean.. They built a basic thing which they can modify easily, or a thing that is anticipated on what is to come

I have a strange feeling about that because we had the same good reliability in nearly all the years until know, but specially in 2011 with the F150 Italia and specially Mclaren was nowhere then.Guess whats happened,Our car was slow as dead and RB and Macca fast and reliable.I hope it does not mean nothing at all:-( :-P

I don't get it, some journo's were saying that we were conservative. But the other, with the dildo/penis, they just try do to the same as last year, as much air under the front as possible. We use the new rules to get air to where we want, by using a different chaped nose, like we can see in this picture... Whether it works better or not, I still think it isn't conservative?
where is the 6-8 element Front wing Ferrari had in 2013? RBR seems to have just shortened their wing from 2013 and bolted it on RB9.

I think we are going slightly a different route with this car concerning the front wing development,it seems that we are abandoning the former concept and they are testing a very simplistic one at the moment, they are for sure developing in WT right know the actual one for Barhain,so no panic,it does not mean anything know.By the way all cars have a very primitive aerodyamics at this stage.

Guys i was reading about Adrian Newey saying that even if they received the 2014 aerodynamics and technical regulations more than 2 years ago(JUNY 2011),they suddenly:oops recognised that the new low noses could be dangerous(oh yeah, even if of course the most Adrian Newey designed F1 cars of the new era were low noses, almost identical to the F14 T or the W05).http://www.sobreruedas.org/var/sbr/storage/images/galerias/formula_1/monoplazas_2008/red_bull_rb4/red_bull_rb4/48920-1-esl-ES/red_bull_rb41.jpg
I believe they have some nose that would not comply with the rules at the moment and that they want to change the rules to accomodate their nose.I alway found it disgusting, playing own interests in the name of safety, and i am afraid that as with the 2013 tyres the other teams and the Fia will give it away. What do you think?

Yes, it is different because this picture has very little in common with the real Engine.
IIRC, the 3D picture of the 059/3 was shown to just some journalists during the presentation in Maranello. However, there are some sketches (one of them from Scarbs) which show that the Ferrari Engine's pipes are going upwards.

Yes this is in line with the rumours of the exhaust orientation. Ferrari tried to hide this and misdirect the competition with their "official" images of the engine but one of the invited guests decided to divulge what he saw in a sketch. Seems he was spot on, I don't think he will be getting an invite next year though from Ferrari. There was a reason they asked them not to bring in their phones and camera's.
I would prefer Ferrari don't show us anything and keep their secrets under wraps so they can keep their advantage longer.
Look at RB. Their success has largely been down to people not understanding how they were so fast so the competition were forever guessing what their secret was and asking for clarification from the FIA in the wrong area.
Look at Ferrari; before the season has begun we have info on exhaust layout, water to air inter-cooler and Renault/Merc lobbying for a 3-4 kilo compulsory turbo shield.
Either Ferrari or our customer teams need to keep their mouths shut and get on with the job. I don't want another Nigel in our organisation!

Raikkonen: “A good start”
http://i61.tinypic.com/16718j9.jpg
Jerez de la Frontera, 28 January – “A good start.” As usual, Kimi Raikkonen’s evaluation was short and to the point, after the F14 T’s track debut. The Finn completed 32 laps on the Andalusian track, which was more than anyone else today.
It was a very unusual day, although that was to be expected. It was inevitable that, with cars that are of an almost completely new design, there would be teething troubles that would slow down the teams’ work of developing the cars. Scuderia Ferrari had its troubles, especially in the morning. But in the afternoon, the Finn was able to do a bit more consistent running.
“The biggest challenge now is to ensure everything works,” Kimi told www.ferrari.com. “The new cars are much more complicated than the previous ones and there are a thousand details that can slow down the work. This morning, we’d have liked to do a few more laps but in the afternoon I think we did a good job. From a driving point of view, I didn’t feel any amazing difference, although it’s much too early to give an opinion on this.”
“Overall, we can say it was a good start. We have a solid base from which to work over the coming days. The times from this test mean nothing and we will only begin to understand something only in Bahrain. The cars are much slower? It’s pointless making comparisons with the past because everything is completely different.”

I'm really happy with the start of the season so far. I really like the look of our car and despite what some whingers say I think it's beautiful. Well done Ferrari for not putting any grotesque dildo nose on the car, a la Macca or FI. Our car's nose is aesthetically very nice and clean.
We've had a positive start to the testing as well and hopefully we'll continue going only forward and then be right at the top in Oz in March.

Williams are running a test livery, they won't be launching their livery proper along with some new sponsors (including probably Martini) closer to the first race :-)

I don't want another Nigel in our organisation!
must raise a few euros to help improve the safety of sauber .. (by the spy shots)

Really annoying and disappointing that Sauber have given that shot away. No point Ferrari trying to keep everything under wraps if Sauber are going to give it away so easily. This just gives other teams ideas now which we really can't afford to do if we want to start off on the front foot.

The new engine sounds are appealing but sound modern or rather clinical. The rise and fall of the engine's amplitude is very controlled. It also sounds like it's been mixed in with that of an electric commuter train or even a RC car somehow emitting a low frequency sound. I like it! There will be greater and greater emphasis on electrical technology for car locomotion so it only makes sense for F1 to incorporate this to some extent with their cars.

Just catching up on Teds note book. Hearing our car under braking reminds me alot of the Audi R18 E-Tron.
But she looks alot better on track.

Here is a clip more similar to how will the engine sound in TV probably (it's from Sky, so I would think their mics are quite decent - even though the video is only in 480p as the uploader is a jerk probably)

The clip of our car from 2:18 reminds me SO much of the F2001. One of my favourite cars.

Probably they will cry to the FIA to change the all engine with a nuclear reactor for safety reasons.
LOL... after reading page after page in this thread with several posts joking how RBR would complain to the FIA asking for this or that change to be allowed for their car, when I got to this post (a nuclear reactor for safety reasons) I started laughing uncontrollably!... Well done :-)
Seriously though, what's with Newey b!tching about how they developed so late into last season that they are a little behind where they want to be right now? (or something to that effect). Come on, half way through '13 we all knew they'd walk to both championships... All their extra development past mid-season was just to show-off their dominance and help Seb gather more records.
It sure would be great if all that late season bravado-overkill does end up costing them this year.

Imagine, if this nose worked and gave a big advantage to Caterham and everyone was forced to copy it... :Cube

I think the f1 turbo engine was put in the La Ferrari for testing before.
But it was legal right ?
The sound of the engine very complicated, just like the engine. :rotfl
KERS must have been efficiently working intead of engine brake, I cant hear it in the sound.

Well, for starters, we've got a new ingredient to throw into the mix: today has been nominated as a wet weather tyre test day.

Surely that will set some back a bit as some teams hardly got their cars going yesterday so not sure how they gonna test wet tires. It does make sense due to the weather though so just as well that we got some good dry laps in yesterday.

I get it that we want to test wet wetter tyres, but how is this usefull if team aren't pushing? I mean with not all the power, is it representative?
piglett

is it representative?
No! The wet run was supposed to be run on Friday. By then all the teams should have had some proper laptimes, and cars more or less troubleshot. Since nature always has it's way, and cars are not being pushed, wet running will be slow.

The thing that disturbs me: from what I read, it has rained during the night, so track is damp, but it wasn't raining anymore, but the decided to make it even more wet.. But what if it rains tomorrow than we have 2 days of wet tesitng.. can't be good..
