Ted's Notebook for Day 1, if anyone interested. 2nd half of Part 1 capture Ferrari passing by a few time. I think this video gives a clearer idea of how the engine sound like due to better equipment use (as compared to cell phone cameras)

sorry guys i dont like the sound of the cars atm. that nice high pitch engine sound is missing and thats what i love the most
Yep, that high pitch sound is the signature sound of a F1 engine, no other engine can produce those sound. This new engine sounds like what we would hear when the car is behind SC running at low RPM and lesser cylinder (which is exactly what they are doing this year).

I thought that after some clarifications a while back there was a rulling that the wishbones have to have some maximum angle of inclination in orther not to work as wings. Quite puzzled by that McLaren...

From this angle seems it's really horizontal, so it's draggy. Can't see it having a beam wing functionality.

These times are probably still way off what 2014 cars are capable of. So it won't tell us the performance yet.
Perhaps one good thing about this is that we seem confident about our reliability that we can run the car at slightly higher performance than others are doing at this early stage of testing. :Hmm

Scarbs saying that function of those McLaren suspension arms might be to direct air to the monkey seat. I'm no aerodynamicist, but the monkey seat doesn't give you any decent gains and those wings seem extremely draggy. Is it worth it?

And our first practice start too. Raikkonen again turns provider, as he pulls to the exit of the pitlane, waits and then launches from the line.
It's not the cleanest of getaways however, as he seems to have to change up early to avoid wheelspin - not entirely unexpected given the slick surface.
Seems Ferrari are very much interested in doing all the things first..Its a shame that they could not get the first lap of 2014

Agree they look quite draggy but who knows. I hope they don't work because it looks like alot of development have gone into that. I think since 2009 suspension parts should be aero neutral so the only thing that I can think of is that they have taken the encased driveshaft a step further and have encased the wishbone maybe.

They can be shaped, but they just have to be aerodynamicly neutral, meaning they have to be vertical. Think there's a few degrees off that mark they can be angled (3 i think?).

From the video posted above, there's a good portion of confidence coming. The car seemed fluent on the mid-fast corners and had good traction on that S chicane. Good to be running and get as much data as possible, which is vital now to find the best set-ups for the car and during the later tests focus on the speed of the car already.

A bit more insight from our technical expert GARY ANDERSON on some potential issues for the Renault teams:
"It seems that Renault is having a few problems. Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull was the only Renault-engined car we saw on track for much of today, with both Caterham and Scuderia Toro Rosso being sat in the garage for a long time.
"Red Bull is the works Renault team, so it's conceivable it is doing some troubleshooting work. Yesterday, the Caterham only managed one lap before stopping with an electrical problem while the Toro Rosso had serious trouble with the engine mapping, which Jean-Eric Vergne said led to the car "oscillating". You could see what he meant as it juddered up the pitlane and out onto the track.
"Today, the Mercedes cars are averaging 14 laps per car and the Ferrari-powered machines 24 laps. Vettel has done eight laps, which means the three Renault-engined machines are averaging less than three laps each for over four hours of running."

But one will clearly stop when getting some to drink ...
From Autosport
Red Bull's troubled start to pre-season Formula 1 testing continued on Wednesday when Sebastian Vettel's running was cut short by a battery problem.
The reigning champion team had only managed to complete three laps on the opening day on Tuesday because of delays caused by a part being fitted incorrectly ahead of its first run.
Its hopes of getting valuable mileage under its belt on Wednesday were then dealt a blow when Vettel was confined to the pits by what is understood to be a Renault energy store issue early in the afternoon.
The team elected to abandon its running for the day so Renault could be given more time to look into the problem and sort a solution for Thursday.
Vettel has cancelled his media commitments for Wednesday evening and flown home.
His new team-mate Daniel Ricciardo will take over for day three as scheduled.
Vettel's issue comes amid a difficult start to the week for Renault, whose mileage has lagged behind its rival engine manufacturers.
With just over than two hours to run on Wednesday, :-E Mercedes had completed 115 laps with its teams, Ferrari has managed 56 while Renault had done just 11.
Renault's engine chief Rob White admitted after the opening day of testing, where various teams were beset by troubles, that the situation needed to improve dramatically.
"I honestly expected there to be more laps on the board right now, but without real up close knowledge of what has been going on in the garage I don't know what has been happening," he said.
"It is kind of a no brainer, but the pace has to ramp up substantially over the coming days and week."
I can clearly see how this new technology cuts the costs down considerably.
It's really obvious.
Since a single team run nearly the same amount of laps like this year all teams together in the first day it means
- less fuel
- less rubber and used old tires
- less pollution
- less smoke
;)

I think what it means by reduce drag is when we compare to the car at slower speed. At low speed, the suspension move in such a way that it close the gap, blocking air and creating a low pressure area above the diffuser.
At high speed, the suspension will cause the thing to separate, opening a gap which allow air to escape which is lesser drag than when it was closed.

At this moment, what worries me the most is the fact that Renault will get help from FIA, extra test or something, because think about it, if they start a grand prix nowing they won't finish, because engine blows up, than every race they start will mean 1 engine less, so if they do so, at the end of the season they will have penalties for sure so, perhaps they will refuse to start a race (lobbying) and want double points at the last race (lobbying), I just have the feeling that bad thinks are going to happen for the sport

Then for the sake of F1 they need to be kicked out,in 2 years they were not able to produce something near to what we would call an engine,as Montezemolo said,if they do not have the money for it they should change sport, well i add,if they are not able to compete with other constructors at the same level, without being helped all the time you should just leave.

Prepare yourself for tons of articles praising McLaren's car... :-??
Probably, but the thing is: Mercs were good last year, so on aero level etc. I think they will be good this year, so if they have a good engine they will compete for the championship, if however McLaren has a good car and competes against them, I think they will do something to make them weaker.. Therefore,I don't think McLaren will go for the titel, Merc won't help them that much, and if McLaren doesn't lead the chamionship come halfway, they will start on 2015 car, wich is more important because of Honda.. Ofcourse I can be wrong

They will go to Charlie Whiting and cry again.
And Charlie is already in the Red Bull garage as you can see here:
http://img2.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Sebastian-Vettel-Red-Bull-Formel-1-Test-Jerez-29-Januar-2014-fotoshowImage-11cad7ec-751493.jpg
hard to define if Charlie's smile says:
a) oh boy let's see how long you can play lovely boy to the media if season turns out as a disaster
or
b) no worry we will find a way to make it work for you ... and if we have to penalize those who made good work the last 2 years ...
16:08 Day 2 results:
1 Jenson Button (McLaren) 1m24.165s, 43 laps
2 Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) 1m24.812s, 47 laps
3 Valtteri Bottas (Williams) 1m25.344s, 35 laps
4 Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) 1m25.588s, 97 laps
5 Sergio Perez (Force India) 1m28.376s, 37 laps
6 Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber) 1m33.270s, 53 laps
7 Marcus Ericsson (Caterham) 1m37.975s, 11 laps
8 Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) 1m38.320s, 8 laps
wow ... 97 laps that is really really impressive based on the situation ...

At this point I'm in Anyone But Red Bull mode, even if it means Ferrari's arch-rivals winning.... I think Red Bull has become the team that I simply hate the most in the 25+ years i've been watching this sport...

Nice vid, the Ferrari engine def sounds better than the Merc, the Williams almost sounding like a truck.
Of the noses Ive seen so far, Id say the Mac is the most F1 looking of the F1 cars..if that makes any sense.
Anyone know what tires Button used to set fastest time?

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking too. It's always that way, when Macca goes fastest in one day in testing then "Oh wow, they must have a really good car, they will win all the races and they will be champions woohooo!" but when Ferrari goes fastest then "oh it's still early days to talk about anything...and it was probably just a fluke and etc."...this pretty much sums up the english speaking media mindset. Will be seeing a lot of articles hyping the Macca car now LOL. :roll
Well, let them hype all they want, I don't care.

Again another productive day.
What worries me is Mercedes! Their engine seems good. Their team has brilliant technical minds. They also have two extremely quick drivers. They may be the team to beat this year.

Remember last year? Wow, McLaren is impressive! During the season they are slow, what about the time during testing? "Yeah, we ran an illegal car height beacause of a mistake"

Ferrari has saved 500 grams of weight by not painting back of the car in red ! Everything counts these days!

The difference in number of laps between Ferrari and Mercedes powered cars versa Renault powered cars is eh....remarkable....:-D...let´s keep it that way. I also like Vettel´s fastest time.....:rotfl

I hope we don't see an all black Ferrari next year, if this weight saving trend continues the same way. Our car has now gotten more black every year. I don't mind the current black parts of the livery but for me this is definitely the maximum level of blackness that I can tolerate on a Ferrari F1 car. Hopefully next year Ferrari will find other ways to save weight than skimping on the beautiful red paint.

Wait, so the black area is actually bare naked carbon fiber? I always thought they had to paint them black.
