Don't minimize the advances made by RBR and Williams. They must be working smarter than Ferrari. Ferrari certainly have greater resources than Williams, and Ferrari started the season well ahead of RBR. But, beyond the amount and quality of the work being done by the teams to produce upgrades, car development is limited by the qualities of the basic chassis and PU with which the team started the season. If there is a limitation or flaw in the basic design, the development and the effectiveness of upgrades will be limited. Since the windtunnel issues are a thing of the past, we believe that the talent in the engineering pool has improved, and Ferrari have a new team principal, the only issue remaining is that the F14T is a bad platform form which to develop a competitive car. I think that the fact that other teams are able to improve at a faster rate than Ferrari is proof of that.

Unless upgrades being developed for the F14T have a direct impact on the 2015 car they are a waste of time.

Interesting point as the basics of this car did not start last summer but possibly a few years ago to get all the new bits packaged in the chassis and this would have been designed when Ferrari had all sorts of wind tunnel/correlation issues so it could be that this package is compromised as is not built on solid foundations or aero understanding. Its was conceptionalised when there were issues. This could of course not be true but it might have?

Valid points from you mark p and Kiwi Nick above, but if that's the case it doesn't bode well for next year either. Maybe we should start with a completely clean sheet and shock 'em all.

Yes, Luca DM did said that this year's car came out of the Toyota wind tunnel. He also said it will be the last car "created without precise wind tunnel".

“This current car is the last car created without a precise wind tunnel plan,” Montezemolo told media at the Circuit de Catalunya.

“It came out of the Toyota tunnel, because ours was not ready, but from now on there will be no more excuses as we finally have an efficient wind tunnel. We are Ferrari, we have been in Formula One since 1950 and we must start winning again.”
Sounds like next year's car will be the product of the new wind tunnel.

Hopefully finished by the end of this month. Don't remember exactly the date, but it is going to be birth place of next year's car.

My hopes for that new facility is that it will have a new and most advance computer system to perform CFD simulations. IMO, that's where the sport is heading, with recent calls to abolish mid season testing, and cut Friday's free practice session. Future car design will probably spend more time being tested in CFD than on track.

Ya, that's a given. Hopefully it leads to better integration of workprocesses, faster and more simulation runs for a given teraflop --- all these and many others must have been accounted for, I guess. C'mon Scuderia!!!

By the way, I didn't see this in any thread. It's a bit OT but I like to hear some opinions -

    Is that Gino ??
Guess the workload was too much for the old man. And the accountabality that comes with being part of Ferrari's think tank.

I think what Marko meant by responsibilities was the what kind of project he can work on. Before this announcement, we've heard rumors that Ferrari not only offered a lot of money to Newey, but also the freedom to work on other stuff. So if it was true, it indicated that Newey was already looking to do something else besides F1.

I think the attraction Red Bull have is that they are involved in many other project besides autoracing, while Ferrari is focused on automobile. In Ferrari, the "other stuff" he may do is to design some other cars, maybe LMP or road cars, but still cars. Wheres Red Bull are involved in different projects such as air racing, boat racing, and scientific ones. Maybe Newey is looking to do something else besides cars.

The biggest problem we probably have is the fact that in developping the car, there hasn't been to much coopertation between different parts of the company, it's what Mattiaci is also saying right now, that we need to find a way to work better to getter and more efficient. Sometimes I have the feeling that it's the same with new Aero parts, we test them but often we don't use everything together, while you would expect that an Aero update is designe to work together...

Let's see if Ferrari use their "updates" in the race. It is sort of a fine line, but it is interesting that they are called updates and not upgrades. More often than not, the changes are merely something new, not better.

I agree about the co-operation between different parts of the whole team . It explains why LdM has bought Mattiaci in and why he clearly thinks his skills as a head of management, albeit without engineering/ design etc skills himself, are relevant to solving Ferrari's past woes. That and a reliable wind tunnel.

Yep, good point. I was sort of thinking along that line. His field of expertise can make him an asset in lots of other projects.
I don't know where I read it, but when he heard that Pat Fry was replacing Aldo Costa, he asked a journalist who was designing the new car, and was taken aback by the response. Mind you, he worked with Pat earlier.

James Allison already said in 2012 that is wrong to pull off too soon,if the next year project is based on the same rules like this year, because you loose the opportunity to further develope the aero for the year ahead(as a carryover) and the possibility to understand the mistakes of the actual car.

The underside of RW bottom flap has sort of a curvature around the place where the single strut is attached, much like Sauber recently tested. End plate louvers start little lower.
Edit: maybe aimed at reducing vortex drag penalty at wing tips.
